Why overdue tasks can make planning worse

A missed plan should trigger recovery, not a larger pile of yesterday.

Many productivity tools treat unfinished work as if it has only one destination: tomorrow. That is neat from a database point of view and often terrible from a human one.

Imagine Tuesday already failed because an appointment ran late and a family issue took the evening. Moving every unfinished Tuesday task into Wednesday does not restore the plan. It makes Wednesday start in debt.

Instead, use a recovery decision. Keep the work that still matters. Move anything that remains valuable but is not urgent. Shrink tasks that can be completed at a lower level of effort. Release work that is no longer worth the pressure it creates.

This is not lowering standards. It is acknowledging that priorities only become real when something has to give. A plan that refuses to change when reality changes is not disciplined; it is brittle.

The goal after disruption is not to recreate the week you intended to have. It is to build the best remaining week from the time and energy that still exist.
